A wheelchair is a mobility device used by people who have difficulty or find it impossible to walk. This will be due to either illness or disability.
There are three basic types of wheelchair.

There are manual chairs which are powered by the rider themselves. This is done by turning the wheels with their arms. They can also be pushed by another person.

Then there are electric wheelchairs which are usually battery powered. They are sometimes convertible between electric and manual. Others will have a break release feature that will allow them to be pushed if this is desired or if the battery is exhausted.

Finally there are transport chairs. These must be pushed by another person as all four wheels are of equal size and generally small, approximately 8 inches.

Wheelchairs come in many sizes and colors and can be highly customized, with several options including seat size (width and depth), seat-to-floor height, foot or leg rests, cup holder, and much more. The problem many people in wheel chairs face is getting into cars, vans, or up some stairs. There are speciality vans that are made for lifting wheelchairs into them. There are also many different types of ramps that you may purchase to help go over stairs.
