LASIK Eye Surgery
LASIK stands for Laser
in situ keratomilieusis. It is a form of laser
surgery that is used to correct vision. It
must be performed by an ophthalmoligist. If
successful it can remove the need of the patient
to use glasses or contact lenses. It is preferred
over the alternative, PRK, as it causes less
pain and requires less time to recover.
Complications from
LASIK are quite rare, but they do occur. They
can include,
· Dry eyes
· Over or under correction
· Light sensitivity
· Double vision
· Slipped corneal flap
LASIK surgery is improving
rapidly as the technology becomes better.
However, there are presently no major studies
on the occurrence and risk of long-term complications
and patients should be aware of this before
opting for the procedure. The procedure is
now being more fully monitored and controlled
by health services to ensure quality and safety
are not compromised.
