Electrolysis
Electrolysis is the
use of electricity to remove hair. Short-wave
electric currents are applied to the skin
to destroy the roots of the hairs. This will
remove the hair from the skin and stop it
from re=growing. It can be used medicinally
or cosmetically. The procedure is generally
safe so long as it is being performed by a
trained operator. The most dangerous area
to perform electrolysis is around the eyes
and should only be performed if absolutely
necessary. Electrolysis of the legs is rarely
carried out because of the length and cost
of the procedure. It is not recommended for
use on large parts of the body.
Electrolysis destroys
the hair follicle and new hair therefore cannot
grow. There is no other significant damage
to the skin however. It is still recommended
that cosmetic use of electrolysis be used
sparingly as it is a significant medical procedure
and all such procedures carry risks.
