Diabetes
Diabetes is a medical
condition where the body doesn't produce enough
insulin or doesn't use insulin properly. There
are several types of diabetes. Some of them
include: Type 1, Type 2 and gestational diabetes.
While adults generally more often
suffer from diabetes, juvenile diabetes
is also possible and requires close monitoring
by a physician.
Diabetes has a wide
range of severity. In many cases, it can be
controlled through a combination of exercise
and diet. Eating sugar is most often not allowed,
or in very small amounts. Foods that convert
to certain types of body sugars such as breads
also have to be eaten in small to moderate
amounts. In more severe cases, a person will
have to check his sugar levels daily and give
himself insulin shots.
Education plays an
important role in the treatment of diabetes.
For example, a nutritionist is often needed
to help a diabetic patient learn new ways
of eating and how to measure the amounts of
foods eaten to give the proper balance so
that the body produces enough insulin and
not too much or too little. So getting the
proper medical care and education is essential
for diabetic patients.
